At Y-GSA, students will qualify for a master's degree by acquiring the necessary credits. Studios are required. For completion of a term-long studio, a student acquires credits (six credits for each studio). A student (who enters the program in or after 2009) must pass four studios under different teachers and acquire at least 40 credits in all to complete the program. A student may not take two studios simultaneously. Failure in one studio will postpone completion of the program by half a year. A student may participate in an internship program in place of one studio and acquire an equivalent number of credits. No master's thesis or master's design is needed to complete the program, but at the end a student will be required to present a short essay on the content of the four studios he or she has taken and a portfolio of work in those studios.
Y-GSA is a two-year master's program with an enrollment of 18 students (maximum: 20) per year. Each student is required to take four studios in all. Four different studios begin simultaneously at the start of each term, in April and October. Students select studios after the nature of each studio has been explained by faculty. To complete the master's program, a student must take and pass four studios under different teachers. Each of them have to acquire at least 40 credits in all to complete the program and pass inspection of their portfolio. As a rule, a faculty member will provide guidance in a studio twice a week, and intermediate and final reviews will be held during each term. Participation in the "Internship Program" can be substituted for one of the four required studios. The "Internship Program" offers practical training in an architectural office in Japan or overseas. To take part in the program, a student must be interviewed by the studio committee, the office at which the student will train must be approved, and the student's qualification must be examined.
The Y-GSA curriculum is designed so that, by fulfilling the abovementioned conditions, students acquire the credits for two years of practical experience necessary before they can take a first-class architect examination.
